Regulation state that an Engine has to be able to contain "blade offs" within the fan case, so they run an engine up to red line speeds and then detonate a small explosive at the base of one of the fan blades and see what happens.
The blade in question is painted a bright colour to highlight it on high speed camera footage.

An initial report on a British Airways plane which caught fire at a Las Vegas airport suggests engine parts flew out and landed on the runway.
The US's National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said the casing around a key component of the engine had been found to have "multiple" breaches.
The casing should contain any damage but spool parts, about 7-8 inches in length, were found on the runway.
The fire forced the evacuation of 170 people on board on emergency slides.
Meanwhile, the plane's pilot Chris Henkey, from Reading, has said he is "unlikely" to fly a scheduled trip to Barbados, after which he was due to retire.
The plane's flight data and cockpit voice recorders are now being examined by the NTSB, and the left engine is due to be shipped to experts to uncover what caused the fire.

The AD basically says that cracks were discovered in an engine, and that airlines now have to do additional testing on an ongoing and regular schedule to see if their engines are suffering the same problem.
Presumably BA complied with that directive.
Interesting is that Boeing and GE both tried to get the wording changed to from declaring it an unsafe condition, and that the cracks couldn't lead to an uncontained failure. The regulator refused their request.
Well, there clearly was an uncontained failure in the exact same area of the engine as described in the AD. If the investigation discovers the same cracks, and identifies them as the cause, then Boeing and GE will have egg on their faces.

Oh shit. I just read it again, that AD was issued on August 18th 2011
Now they don't have to take them out of service but they do have to comply with the directive by a certain date, so who knows what the paper trail is on this particular GE90 engine

No, that particular AD became effective on August 18th well before this incident
On another point, as I know Whuffy will read this, I will hold my hands up and concede that I was wrong in suggesting that Easyjet engine getting taped, were bleed holes, while engines do have these, it does seem they are rivets
So I apologise to Whuffy as it seems I was wrong

That is standard procedure prior to thorough investigation. Sometimes the manufacturer blows the whistle though.

No they haven't grounded them YET but as Herts link shows, they have issued an airworthiness directive for that particular engine

The NTSB have not seen fit to ground planes with that model of GE engine yet. Neither do GE seem to have made a statement.
